Fruit trees that grow with a purpose

Avocado, jackfruit and mango trees are among the fruit trees being grown for the programme. As they establish and mature, fruit trees can capture and store carbon while providing fruit that can contribute to household nutrition and livelihoods.

The benefits don't stop at the tree. Families are supported to develop the knowledge and skills to care for their trees and make the most of their land.

Grown locally in Kenya

The saplings are grown by a local nursery established by Feeding Futures and subsequently handed over to local management. Feeding Futures purchases saplings from the nursery, helping support local growing expertise and livelihoods.

Training that lasts for years

Planting a tree is just the beginning. Feeding Futures’ field team works with farmers over a period of years, providing practical training in sustainable farming methods.

Farmers learn and put those skills into practice on the school farm and on their own shamba — their family farm. Field-team visits help them apply what they've learned, receive advice and develop their confidence in caring for their land and trees.

Because a sapling needs more than a hole in the ground. It needs care, knowledge and ongoing support to thrive.

Growing food for children at school

The programme also connects farming and education. Children attend the local school, where the school farm helps grow food for hot school meals. Practical farming activities form part of the wider approach to building knowledge and supporting the school community.
